Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, March 29) — Filipino senior citizens and those with comorbidities are now encouraged to register to get their COVID-19 shot alongside health workers.

Amid the implementation of the enhanced community quarantine, some local government units in Metro Manila have already scheduled the simultaneous vaccination of the A1, A2, and A3 sectors. A1 refers to medical fronliners, A2 to senior citizens, while A3 covers persons with comorbidities.

So far, Manila, Navotas, and Pateros have kickstarted their vaccination drive for the elderly, while San Juan and Caloocan have included those with comorbidities in their inoculation this week.

Over the weekend, the Department of Health said the A2 priority group or those aged 60 and above in Metro Manila must sign up until March 31, while those in other regions can do so until April 5 for the COVID-19 vaccine drive. On Monday evening, they also encouraged persons with comorbidities to sign up.

Through its Resolution 106, the Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases said the A2 and the A3 groups, which refer to senior citizens and people with comorbidities, are now officially included in the “quick substitution list.” This allows them to get their COVID-19 shots when a medical frontliner scheduled to get vaccinated ahead of them backs out last minute. Currently, the government is finishing the inoculation of 1.7 million healthcare workers.

The Health Department said those under 65 years old with chronic respiratory disease, hypertension, cardiovascular disease, malignancy, diabetes mellitus, obesity, and chronic kidney disease can preregister to receive the vaccines now.

In a briefing on Tuesday, March 30, vaccine czar Carlito Galvez Jr. said local government units have simplified their pre-registration process for those with comorbidities to help fast-track the rollout for them.

He noted that the simultaneous vaccination for the first three priority groups will be done with the help of the LGUs and the private sector.

Once done with the 3.4 million doses for health workers, the government will distribute doses for 9.4 million senior citizens and 14 million people with comorbidities. They will then provide doses for 11 million economic frontliners and 17.7 million indigents.

A massive rollout for the other priority groups can be expected between May and June as more vaccines will be shipped to the country, Galvez added.
